Located in Dulwich, London Borough of Southwark the 110m long retaining wall supports the public highway at the upper level and faces onto residential properties at the lower level.
The outgoing brick face retaining wall failed comprehensively and Sustainable were commissioned to carry out a replacement feasibility study with design and site supervision of the replacement option. We took the opportunity to improve the environment for the local residents by designing a Green Wall using crib walling. Planted with ivy the new wall was not only less expensive than a like-for-like replacement but the overall shape was softened by the newly planted foliage linking the surrounding landscaping with the naturally coloured timber fence at the highway level.
